While working from home is ideal for many people, it has always come with its challenges. Some of the most common struggles include staying motivated, maintaining productivity, and balancing work and home life. And when you’re a parent with kids who are home all day, those challenges are amplified. That’s why we’ve provided some tips below for work-at-home parents who are trying to balance their full-time careers with their full-time families.

Don’t Go It Alone

First of all, trying to do everything yourself will only increase stress. See if you can budget to hire some help with everyday tasks.

  • Find a trusty handyman you can call for any repairs that come up around the house.
  • Hiring a nanny to help your children get the attention they need while you’re working. Or a tutor for enrichment.
  • If you own a business, consider hiring freelancers to lighten your load.
  • Keep your kids learning while you work with a kid-friendly laptop.
Set Up for Success

Even though you’re a parent, it’s essential that you stay productive and provide good work for your clients/customers.

  • A dedicated workspace is critical for a healthy balance between work and home life.
  • A garage could serve as an out-of-the-way space for an office, but you may need to make a few modifications including adding epoxy to the floor.
  • Establish steady (but flexible) work hours to help set boundaries.
Practice Self-Care

And of course, you need to take care of your health and well-being on a daily basis.

  • Developing a good morning routine to help everyone set the stage for a good day.
  • What you eat also makes a big difference, so try to stick to a well-balanced diet.
  • Implement a fitness routine you enjoy, and try to make it happen five days a week.
  • Getting enough sleep will help you feel better and work more productively.

Few things are more challenging than working from home as a parent. But if you hire the help you need, put yourself in a position for success in your work, and add self-care to your daily routine, you will be on the right track for striking a healthy balance between your career and parenting. Most importantly, try to keep a positive attitude, and always remain open-minded to other ways that you can improve the daily lives of you and your children.
